Choosing The Right Acrobatics Grade
As we look to make our acrobatic class numbers smaller, we have devised a new system of grading and placing students into the correct class level.
The list below is to be used as a guide and is not an exhaustive list. It remains at the teacher’s discretion as to whether a child should be moved up or down a class and any movement in grades is in the best interest of the student and their safety. Alongside our annual examinations we are aware it can take students a lot longer to progress through acrobatic grades due to the complexity and vast array of tricks and tumbles. To encourage students and allow an accurate representation of a student’s progression we will be introducing an in-house rosette award system. This allows students to be awarded within class for their skill developments.

Acro Tots – Introductory class for children of pre-school age. Students are introduced to acrobatics through a series of fun, informative sing-along routines that help them understand instruction, body movement and control. Students begin basic floor tricks and tumbles including a variety of rolls, balances and jumps.
Preparatory Acrobatics – Suitable for 4-6 year old students (beginner or small amount of experience). Students explore acrobatics through the IDTA preparatory syllabus with a circus themed selection of routines and exercises. Classes are combined with tricks and tumbles where students focus on a variety of rolls, cartwheels, bridges, jumps and stretches. Students not ready to complete the full technical exam can progress through our rosette system at this level.
Primary Acrobatics – Suitable for students 7yrs + moving up from Preparatory or joining us with school based gymnastic experience. Students explore acrobatics through the IDTA Primary syllabus with a cheer themed selection of routines and exercises. Classes are combined with a development in tricks and tumbles which include (but are not limited to) rolls, cartwheels, bridges, handstands, round offs, balances, headstands, jumps, back bends, shoulder stands etc.
Grade 1 Acrobatics
Grade 1 Acrobatics – Suitable for 7 – 11yrs with previous acrobatic/gymnastic experience meaning they can execute the majority of skills listed above. Students continue to develop their acrobatics in line with the IDTA Acrobatic Dance Syllabus but with a strong concentration on developing a high skill level with floor tumbles and tricks. At this level students begin to concentrate on the conditioning and strength training required to execute the more difficult tricks and tumbles. Weekly classes have a focus point on 1 or 2 specific skills and these can include but are not limited to (all shown in above grades) + walkovers front and back, handstand forward rolls, holding more complex balances for over 8 counts, one handed cartwheels, cartwheel developments and chest stands.
Grade 2 Acrobatics
Grade 2 Acrobatics – Suitable for 9 years + and/or previous experience. Students continue to develop their acrobatics in line with the IDTA Acrobatic Dance Syllabus and continue concentrating on developing a high skill level with floor tumbles and tricks. At this level students should have a stronger developed core through conditioning and we continue to work on this within class. Students at this grade should understand the aesthetic requirements and be able to demonstrate these in their work such as pointed feet, stretched arms and legs, straight lines and stable execution of moves. Weekly classes have a focus point on a specific skill and these can include but are not limited to (all shown in above grades) + walkovers front and back plus developments, aerial preparation, front handspring preparation, back handspring preparation, contortion, advanced rolls and handstand developments etc. Students at this level are invited to participate in the IDTA medals.
Grade 3 Acrobatics
Grade 3 Acrobatics – Suitable for students with a high acrobatic/gymnastic skill level already. Students joining this class must have a developed sense of self control, strengthened core and strong understanding of the previous grades. Tricks and tumbles at this level are combined with a variety of linking and agility moves so it is recommended students also take a technical dance class alongside. Students must be carefully assessed before being invited to join this level to ensure they are physically able to execute the high impact acrobatic moves safely. Students must already be able to execute fluid walkovers front and back, technically correct cartwheel and a range of cartwheel developments, be able to demonstrate the correct preparations for front and back handsprings and aerials.
